Community-Ed Care Farm

We are always looking for meaningful, hands‑on opportunities that help our students grow. One of the most exciting developments this year has been the introduction of Community-Ed’s Care Farm, a small but incredibly valuable resource just a short journey from school.

A number of our students have already had the chance to get involved, spending time caring for our two ponies, Brandy and Bailey, and learning what it really means to look after animals. The farm offers a calm, natural space where students can be outdoors, burn off energy, and develop practical skills in a setting very different from the classroom.

Even our school dogs, Nigel and Daphnie, join the visits, and they certainly enjoy the fresh air and freedom as much as the students do.

But the learning doesn’t stop at the farm. Back in school, students have been working on projects linked to its development. Some have been planting seeds, exploring the seasons, and thinking about how the farm might grow to welcome new animals in the future. This has helped them understand planning, responsibility and long‑term thinking in a real‑world context.

We know that not every student is passionate about animals and that’s okay. As a person‑centred school, we recognise that one size never fits all. That’s why other students have been contributing in different ways, particularly through woodwork. They have created bird boxes, welly‑boot holders and even cavaletti horse jumps and rabbit run for our newest member of the farm Ed the rabbit. These projects allow students to take part in the farm’s development using their own strengths and interests, ensuring everyone has a meaningful role.

Currently, the Care Farm is offered through our Enrichment Fridays, with some students earning additional visits as a reward for their hard work and positive engagement in school. This approach gives students something tangible to work towards and reinforces the value of effort, focus and positive behaviour.

Community-Ed’s Care Farm is still developing, but it is already becoming a powerful part of our curriculum as you can see from the pictures. It is a place where students can learn, contribute and grow in ways that truly matter to them. We’re excited to see how it continues to evolve. Students are working hard to develop plans and create a vision of how Community-Ed Farm will grow……
